The first projects of a new dam were designed already at the times of Austria-Hungary. A quite concrete project was drafted in the period between the two wars within the large-scale plan of Vltava cascades and water power stations. The realization of the Lipno dam was interrupted by World War Two, but already in 1948 the project works were resumed and construction of the valley dam started in 1952
